Since its foundation and recognition in 1983, the University of Witten / Herdecke (UW/H) has a pioneering role in the German educational landscape. Since about three decades, the UW/H did provide important impulses for research and teaching.

The Faculty of Health was founded on October 4, 2010 at the University of Witten / Herdecke.

Department of Human Medicine

The Department of Human Medicine was founded in 1983 to reform the training of doctors.

Institute for Research in Operative Medicine (IFOM)
IFOM Front Entrance

The Institute for Research in Operative Medicine (IFOM) is one of the most research-intensive institutions in this department and is associated with the Chair of Surgical Research. The IFOM accounts for a large share of scientific performance at the Faculty of Health at Witten / Herdecke University (UW/H) and is also a major driving force behind faculty advancement.

Researchers from a variety of disciplines are active in four IFOM departments which cover

  • experimental research,
  • clinical research,
  • evidence-based health services research, and
  • biometrics and registry research,

with one head of department respectively.

All departments of the institute are TÜV Rheinland certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001.

IFOM Sign
The IFOM is part of the campus of the Cologne Merheim Medical Centre (buildings 38 and 33), located about 10 km east of the city centre of Cologne. The site comprises a large maximum-care hospital complex, the Federal Centre for Health Education, and a regional hospital for psychiatry.
